    Hot chocolate allowed during paryushan

    12 months ago 208

Short answer: Best to avoid hot chocolate during Paryushan.

    Reasoning in simple terms

    • Upvās (complete fast, with only boiled water in daylight): Not allowed.
    • Ayambil: Not allowed (it has milk, sugar, cocoa—Ayambil is one very plain meal without milk, ghee, oil, sugar, etc.).
    • Ekāsan/Biyāsan: If you are NOT fasting strictly, very simple food is allowed in one/two sittings before sunset. Even then, hot chocolate is generally discouraged because Paryushan emphasizes simplicity, restraint, and avoiding stimulants/indulgences. If your local maryādā permits, it would have to be:
    - taken only with your daytime meal (never after sunset), - freshly prepared at home the same day, - made from Jain-friendly ingredients (pure cocoa, milk, sugar; no eggs/gelatin/marshmallows; avoid flavorings with alcohol/fermentation).
    • After sunset (Chauvihār): Nothing to eat or drink, so hot chocolate is not allowed at night.
    • Both Śvetāmbara Paryushan and Digambara Das‑Lakshan encourage simpler, plainer intake; many devotees voluntarily avoid tea/coffee/chocolate-type stimulants in this period.

In the true spirit of Paryushan—tapas, apramatta, and aparigraha—choose the simpler side and avoid hot chocolate unless your guru or local sangh has clearly allowed it.

    Helpful basics and do’s/don’ts:

    • Food rules during Paryushan
    • Rules during fasts in Paryushan
    • Daylight-only water guidance (when to take last water)
