Is Hot chocolate allowed during paryushan
Short answer: It’s best to avoid hot chocolate during Paryushan.
Why:
- Paryushan is for tapa (austerity) and simplicity. Sweets and rich/tasty drinks (like chocolate, tea/coffee) are generally given up as ras-tyag (renouncing taste).
- Many observe no outside/packaged foods; hot chocolate is usually processed or bought outside.
- If you have taken tyag of milk/curd/sugar, then hot chocolate is definitely not allowed.
- Fermented items are avoided; commercial chocolate involves fermentation in processing, so many Jains refrain for extra care in ahimsa.
- Always avoid anything after sunset; water too is regulated.
If not on a fast and you have not taken such tyag, some families may allow very simple, home‑made, daylight‑time beverages. Even then, prefer plain, light food and avoid indulgence. During Das Lakshan (Digambar) and Paryushan (Shwetambar), both traditions encourage maximum restraint and simplicity; so abstaining is the safer, dharmic choice.
