Yes, it is a valid tapa.

    • What you did: 2 days Upavās, then Pārṇā (break fast) for a day, then 5 more days of Upavās.
    • How it is counted: This is not one continuous long fast; it is multiple Upavās performed on separate days. Spiritually, each Upavās is a complete external austerity (bāhya tapa) under “Anashana” (fasting). So you have performed 7 Upavās during Paryuṣaṇa, with one eating day in between. This is fully valid when done with samyak-bhāva (right attitude) and proper maryādā (rules).

    Name of this tapa

    • Traditional named long fasts require continuity. For example:
    - Attham = 3 consecutive Upavās. - Atthai = 8 consecutive Upavās. - Māsakṣamaṇa = 30 consecutive Upavās.
    • Because you inserted a Pārṇā day after the first 2, your practice does not become “Attham/Atthai.” It is simply “Anashana (Upavās) done on seven days” during Paryuṣaṇa. There is no special classical name for “2 days Upavās + break + 5 days Upavās.” It is recorded as multiple Upavās, not a single continuous taap.

    Notes on traditions

    • Śvetāmbara and Digambara both honor Upavās as Anashana among the 6 external tapas. The specific names like Attham/Atthai assume consecutive days without a break; inserting Pārṇā resets the count in both traditions.

    Practical guidance

    • Observe Pārṇā with proper bhakta-parijñā and niyams.
    • Maintain gupti (control), samiti (carefulness), pratikramaṇ, and meditation to transform the external tapa into inner purity (abhyantara tapa).
    • Record it as “7 Upavās (non-consecutive series)” rather than a single named long fast.
