    25 mithyatva names

    12 months ago 182

Here are the 25 Mithyātva (wrong-belief) forms traditionally confessed as “Mithyātva-pañchaviṁśati” in Pratikraman. Each point is a short name/description:

    1) Stubbornly upholding a false viewpoint 2) Showing equal faith in all deities/teachers without discerning right from wrong 3) Clinging to one’s opinions even after knowing they may be false 4) Doubting the true religion (samyak-darshan) 5) Total ignorance/indifference to truth 6) Observing festivals of non-true deities/teachers 7) Worshipping Tirthankars with selfish/worldly motives 8) Approving or siding with hypocrites 9) Taking living beings to be non-living 10) Taking non-living to be living 11) Taking true saints/monks to be non-saints 12) Taking non-saints to be saints/monks 13) Taking liberated souls (Siddhas) to be non-liberated 14) Taking non-liberated to be liberated 15) Calling the holy unholy 16) Calling the unholy holy 17) Holding the Jain path as merely equal to other paths 18) Holding other paths as equal to the Jain path 19) Understating Jain truths 20) Overstating Jain truths 21) Speaking contrary to Jain truths 22) Disrespecting true teachers/saints 23) Disbelieving in religious practices 24) Glorifying ignorance 25) Misbehaving with teachers/saints

    Notes on tradition:

    • Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions confess these 25 faults in spirit during Pratikraman; wording/ordering may vary by text and language, but the intent remains the same.
