Mahavir Bhagwan had the Shrivatsa on his chest in place of the ambodo after becoming a Tirthankar. Shrivatsa is the auspicious sign that appears as a soft, raised whorl of fine hair on the Jina’s chest.

• Shvetambar tradition: clearly affirms and often depicts the Shrivatsa mark on Tirthankar idols.
• Digambar tradition: accepts auspicious marks of Tirthankars but generally does not carve or paint the Shrivatsa on idols.
