Can we eat curd in paryushan
Short answer: No. During Paryushan/Das‑Lakshan, curd (yogurt) is to be avoided.
Reason (in simple words):
- Paryushan is a time to minimize himsa in food.
- Curd is a fermented item containing innumerable living microorganisms; Jain acharyas advise giving up all fermented foods in these days.
- Along with curd, buttermilk, lassi, and other yogurt‑based preparations are also avoided.
- If there is a genuine medical need, it may be taken only as aushadhi, in minimal quantity, before sunset, after proper pachchakkhān (vow) as per your Guru/paramparā.
Traditions:
- Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara practices emphasize avoiding fermented foods during this period. Local household practices can vary, but the recommended discipline is complete avoidance.
