May I eat fruits during paryushan

    12 months ago 168

Yes—if you are not doing a complete fast (upvās, attham, atthai, etc.), eating fresh fruits is generally allowed during Paryushan. Follow these Jain maryādā points:

    • Daylight only: Eat only before sunset (choviyār). Take only boiled/filtered water in daylight.
    • Prefer simple, fresh fruit: Eat whole fruits or cut them fresh and consume immediately. Avoid overripe fruit and anything kept long after cutting.
    • Check for himsā: Wash well and inspect for insects. Do not use honey.
    • Avoid roots and leafy items: Root vegetables are prohibited; many also avoid green leafy vegetables during Paryushan.
    • Seeds and delicate-life fruits: Many families avoid figs (anjeer) and sometimes very seedy fruits to minimize subtle himsā—follow your local sangh/guru’s guidance.
    • Tradition notes:
    - Shvetāmbara: Commonly keep a simpler diet; fruits are acceptable if not fasting, with the above cautions. - Digambara (Daśalakṣaṇa): Often even simpler; fruits may be taken as per one’s vow, still only in daylight and with vigilance (apramatta).

If you have taken a stricter vow (e.g., nirjal upvās, only boiled water, āyambil without fruits, ekāsan with defined items), keep exactly to that pachkhan.
