Stories of all tirtankars
Here are very short, traditional life‑sketches (charitra) of the 24 Tirthankars of the current avasarpini. They preserve the Jain spiritual essence: auspicious birth, renunciation, attainment of Kevalgyan, establishment of the fourfold sangh, and final moksha. Where Digambar–Shvetambar details differ, it is noted.
1) Shri Rishabhdev (Adinath)
- First Tirthankar. Taught basic arts of living to humanity, later renounced, attained Kevalgyan, and ultimately moksha. Traditional accounts place moksha at Ashtapad.
2) Shri Ajitnath
- Royal birth at Ayodhya, great compassion and detachment; renounced, attained Kevalgyan, guided countless souls, attained moksha.
3) Shri Sambhavnath
- Auspicious prosperity marked his conception; ruled righteously, accepted diksha, attained Kevalgyan, preached, and attained moksha.
4) Shri Abhinandannath
- Known for serenity and humility; renounced royal life, attained Kevalgyan, led many on the path of right faith, knowledge, and conduct; attained moksha.
5) Shri Sumatinath
- Born with signs of purity and wisdom; embraced asceticism early, attained Kevalgyan, spread ahimsa and self‑restraint, attained moksha.
6) Shri Padmaprabha
- Lotus‑auspicious signs; renounced youthful luxuries, attained Kevalgyan, taught truth and discipline, attained moksha.
7) Shri Suparshvanath
- Compassionate and just; accepted diksha, attained Kevalgyan, upheld non‑violence and equanimity, attained moksha.
8) Shri Chandraprabha
- Moon‑like calm; left the throne, attained Kevalgyan through deep tapas, spread dharma, attained moksha.
9) Shri Suvidhinath (Pushpadant)
- Known for right conduct; renounced, attained Kevalgyan, emphasized practical purity of life, attained moksha.
10) Shri Sheetalnath
- “Sheetal” (cool, pacifying) nature; after wise rule, renounced, attained Kevalgyan, taught peace and restraint, attained moksha.
11) Shri Shreyansnath
- Naturally benevolent; embraced asceticism, attained Kevalgyan, guided many towards right living, attained moksha.
12) Shri Vasupujya
- Dispassion from youth; renounced, attained Kevalgyan, preached dharma; moksha at Champapuri (distinct from most others).
13) Shri Vimalnath
- “Vimal” (pure) conduct; renounced, attained Kevalgyan, led seekers to inner purity, attained moksha.
14) Shri Anantanath
- Infinite steadfastness; accepted diksha, attained Kevalgyan, spread the path of liberation, attained moksha.
15) Shri Dharmanath
- Embodiment of “dharma”; renounced, attained Kevalgyan, established many in vows and right conduct, attained moksha.
16) Shri Shantinath
- Known for profound shanti (peace); after renunciation, attained Kevalgyan, taught forgiveness and inner calm, attained moksha.
17) Shri Kunthunath
- Firm in vows; renounced sovereignty, attained Kevalgyan, guided with firmness and compassion, attained moksha.
18) Shri Aranath
- Protector of beings; embraced tapas, attained Kevalgyan, inspired fearlessness in dharma, attained moksha.
19) Shri Mallinath
- Supreme detachment and austerity; attained Kevalgyan and moksha. Tradition note: Shvetambar holds Mallinath as female in this birth; Digambar holds male—spiritual attainment is equally supreme in both traditions.
20) Shri Munisuvratnath
- Vow‑centered life; renounced, attained Kevalgyan, emphasized vows and inner purity, attained moksha.
21) Shri Naminath
- Deeply devotional and gentle; accepted diksha, attained Kevalgyan, encouraged compassion and right perception, attained moksha.
22) Shri Neminath (Aristanemi)
- Renounced on seeing the suffering of animals at his wedding‑feast; attained Kevalgyan; moksha at Girnar.
23) Shri Parshvanath
- Great protector of living beings; taught four vows (Digambar: integrated as core ascetic vows), attained Kevalgyan; moksha at Sammed Shikharji; closely associated with Dharanendra‑Padmavati episode in traditional charitra.
24) Shri Mahavir Swami
- Last Tirthankar of this cycle; perfected the path of five great vows, attained Kevalgyan, organized the sangh; moksha at Pavapuri.
Important traditional note on moksha‑kshetras
- Most Tirthankars (20) attain nirvana at Sammed Shikharji. Traditional exceptions are: Rishabhdev (Ashtapad), Vasupujya (Champapuri), Neminath (Girnar), and Mahavir (Pavapuri).
