Jain aarti – simple meaning

• What aarti is: In Jain tradition, aarti is a loving offering of light (deepak) before the image of a Tirthankar. The flame symbolizes right knowledge dispelling the darkness of ignorance and passions.

• Why it is done: To express reverence and gratitude to the Arihants and Siddhas, to remember their virtues, and to strengthen our own resolve for samyak darshan, samyak jnana, and samyak charitra. It is not for asking favors or worldly boons.

• How it is performed: A lit lamp is gently circled clockwise before the Tirthankar while singing aarti/stavan that praises the qualities of the Enlightened Ones. Bells may ring, and devotees absorb the light’s warmth to remind themselves to kindle inner purity. Often it concludes with “Mangal Divo” (auspicious lamp).
