Why do we recite logasse upto chandesu nimalayara only during Kausagga in pratikraman

    12 months ago 94

    Short answer

    • In Pratikraman, Kausagga (kāyotsarga) is the phase of stillness and inner contemplation on the 24 Tirthankars and the Siddhas.
    • The Logassa (Chaturvimsati-stava) has seven gāthās, and its canonical completion is the last stanza ending with “chandesu nimmalayara.” That stanza is the phalāśruti: it prays for samādhi and spiritual progress, which matches the very aim of Kausagga.
    • Therefore, during Kausagga we recite Logassa only up to “chandesu nimmalayara” and conclude there. Beyond this there is no further part of the Logassa; the Kausagga then ends and the next avashyaka proceeds.

Meaning of the closing line (simple) “Chandesu nimmalayara … siddhā siddhiṁ mama disantu” = “O Siddhas, pure among the celestials, profound like the ocean, kindly bestow (guide me to) perfection.” This is why it forms the natural end-point during Kausagga.

    Tradition note

    • Śvetāmbara Pratikraman paddhatis prescribe reciting the full seven gāthās of Logassa in Kausagga, concluding at “chandesu nimmalayara.”
    • Digambara paddhati differs in order/texts used for their avashyakas; the above practice pertains to Śvetāmbara tradition.
