During paryushan, can i eat fruits
Short answer: Yes—fruits can be eaten during Paryushan if your vow (pachchakkhān) allows it.
Keep these simple rules in mind:
- If you are on Upvās (complete fast): no fruits.
- If you are doing Phalāhar: only fruits/nuts (taken in daylight).
- If you are doing Ayambil or “only boiled food” (ukāḍu): generally no fruits.
- Always eat only in daylight (no eating after sunset). Use boiled/filtered water only in daylight.
- Wash well; cut and finish quickly. Avoid overripe or infested fruits.
- Do not take processed, coated, or syrupy fruit products.
Tradition notes:
- Shvetāmbara Paryushan: Many avoid leafy greens; simple fresh fruits are usually allowed unless your guru/gaccha has advised otherwise.
- Digambara Das‑Lakshan: Many keep stricter food rules (ekāsan/boiled food). Fruits are taken only if one has specifically vowed Phalāhar; otherwise they may be avoided.
When in doubt, follow your guru, local saṅgh, or family maryādā first.
