May I eat peanuts during paryushan
Short answer: Best to avoid.
Why:
- Peanuts (groundnuts) grow underground, so many Jain maryadas treat them like kand-mool (bhūmi-gata). During Paryushan, both Shvetambar and Digambar traditions generally avoid kand-mool to reduce himsa.
- If your local sangh has a different guideline, follow that maryada; but the safer, more traditional practice is to not eat peanuts.
What to take instead:
- Tree nuts like almonds, cashews, walnuts, raisins/dry fruits, and simple grains/dals prepared plainly before sunset.
