In ekashana what do we eat?
Ekashana (ekasana/ekashna) means “one meal in one sitting during daylight.” It mainly limits how often and when you eat—not a special recipe. So, what do you eat?
- Eat a simple, pure Jain meal that is freshly cooked that day.
- Typical items: roti/chapati, rice, dal, cooked vegetables, simple khichdi, etc.
- Use boiled/filtered water only, and take it as per your discipline (many take water only with the meal).
- Do not eat again, take second helpings after you finish, or add new items later.
- Avoid leftovers, avoid eating after sunset, and keep the plate simple (no indulgence).
Notes by tradition:
- Shwetambar: One meal in one place before sunset; simple Jain vegetarian food. Many households also avoid roots; follow your family/guru’s niyam.
- Digambar (Ekabhukta): Same one-meal vow, generally stricter simplicity; often water only with the meal.
Remember: Ekashana is different from Aayambil. Aayambil has extra food restrictions (very bland, no milk/yogurt/oil, etc.). In plain Ekashana you eat normal Jain satvik food, just once and simply.
