    porsi durinf paryushan

    12 months ago 93

“Porsi” means taking your single proper meal about 3 hours after sunrise. It is a disciplined, daylight meal meant to support vows like ekāsan (one-sitting meal) and chauvihār (no food or water after sunset).

How to do Porsi during Paryushan

    • Timing: Start the meal roughly 3 hours after local sunrise, and always finish well before sunset. Example: if sunrise is 6:15 AM, porsi is around 9:15 AM.
    • Vows: Many observe ekāsan or āyambil during Paryushan; both are ideally done at porsi time.
    • Water: Daytime only, boiled/filtered water; stop after sunset (chauvihār).
    • Ahimsā care: Filtered water, inspect food, avoid eating outside, and be gentle with all life.
    • Simplicity: Prefer simple, non-spicy, non-fermented food. Follow local pachkhan (e.g., no green vegetables if your sangh gives that instruction).
    • Daily practices: Coordinate with samayik and pratikraman so the meal does not disturb these.

    Tradition notes

    • Shvetāmbara Paryushan (8 days): Porsi is common for those not fasting completely, often with ekāsan/āyambil.
    • Digambara Dasalakshan (10 days): Many observe ekabhukti (one meal a day) in daylight; this is effectively at porsi time. Night eating is avoided.

Essence Porsi during Paryushan is about restraint, purity, and mindfulness—eating once, in daylight, with minimum himsā, and keeping focus on pratikraman, svādhyāy, and forgiveness.
