    Tips for observing fast

    12 months ago 120

Here are simple, tradition‑aligned tips to observe a Jain fast (upavās) with purity and care.

    Purpose and mindset

    • Begin with a clear saṅkalp (intention): “I fast to reduce karma, strengthen saiyam (self‑restraint), and cultivate maitri, kṣamā, and aparigraha.”
    • Keep the day filled with dharma: Navkār mantra, sāmāyik, svādhyāy, pratikraman, alochanā, and kāyotsarg.
    • Maintain inner vows: truthfulness, calm speech, non‑hurtfulness, and carefulness in movement.

    Choose the vrat (type) correctly

    • Proṣadhopavās/Upavās: full day without food; water as per your pachchakhān.
    • Ayambil: one meal, very plain (boiled, no frying, milk/curd/ghee/oil/sugar/green veg/spices avoided).
    • Ekāsan/Beāsan: one sitting/two sittings, without snacks in‑between.
    • Tivihār/Chauvihār: stop eating after sunset; with Chauvihār, also avoid water after sunset.
    • Longer tapas (e.g., Bītī, Attham, Navkāi) should be taken only with proper guidance from a Jain guru.

    Before you start (preparation)

    • Sleep well the previous night; keep the schedule light.
    • Do pachchakhān (formal vow) in the morning, specifying: type of fast, water allowance, medicine rules, and sunset discipline.
    • Plan your day around dharmic activities; keep the phone and social media minimal.
    • If doing Ayambil/Ekāsan, arrange simple permitted food in advance.

    During the fast (conduct)

    • Keep awareness (apramattatā). Walk slowly, avoid harm to even the smallest beings.
    • Guard the mind: no anger, pride, deceit, greed; practice forgiveness and friendliness.
    • Guard speech: speak softly, briefly, truthfully; avoid arguments and gossip.
    • Guard body: avoid heavy exertion, unnecessary travel, daytime sleep.
    • Hydration as per vow. If on Chauvihār, finish water before sunset.
    • Spend time in:
    - Navkār japa, Pācchakhan reaffirmation - Sāmāyik (meditative equanimity) - Pratikraman (daily evening; on Proṣadh, also midday if possible) - Svādhyāy: Sutras like Iriyā Vahiya, Navkār, Logassa, and Tattvārth recitation - Kāyotsarg: stillness with awareness of the soul - Maitri bhāvanā, Kṣamā yāchanā (asking and giving forgiveness)
    • Charity and seva: do dāna, but discreetly and without show.

    If weakness occurs

    • Sit or lie down; do calm breathing and brief kāyotsarg.
    • If you must break due to health, do so mindfully with a short alochanā, then take boiled warm water; continue with light dharma the rest of the day.

    Breaking the fast (paryāpti/pariṇāman)

    • Time: Preferably after sunrise (or at the set completion time) with proper pachchakhān closure.
    • Sequence:
    1) Boiled warm water. 2) For Ayambil: simple, permitted items only. 3) For Ekāsan/Upavās: start with light, easy‑to‑digest food; eat slowly, in moderation, without taste‑indulgence.
    • Offer inner gratitude; avoid heavy, spicy, or overeating.

    Cleanliness and care

    • Filtered water (pañch‑pāni), covered food, and clean utensils.
    • Eat only what is necessary; avoid green vegetables and root vegetables when the vow or period (like Paryushan) requires.

    Discipline after sunset

    • Complete all meals/water before sunset if you have taken Tivihār/Chauvihār.
    • Do evening pratikraman and forgiveness bhāvanā before sleeping.

    Health notes (within Jain discipline)

    • Fasting must never be for showing off. If you have medical conditions, take guidance from your Jain guru and, where needed, your doctor. Life and non‑violence to the self are also dharma.

    Essence to remember

    • The value of fast is in inner purity, not just food restriction.
    • Right faith, right knowledge, right conduct—let the fast support these three.
