What to do after parent death

    12 months ago 253

I’m sorry for your loss. Here is a simple, tradition‑faithful Jain way to proceed after a parent’s death.

    Core understanding

    • The soul (jīva) is eternal. Death is only a change of body according to one’s own karma. The most helpful thing you can do is keep equanimity (sāmāyik bhāva) and create pure merit (puṇya) through right conduct.

    Immediately

    • Maintain calm and recite the Navkār Mantra softly. Avoid loud lamentation; it disturbs passions (kaṣāyas).
    • Offer forgiveness from the heart: “Michchhāmi Dukkaḍaṁ.” Let go of every grievance.
    • Keep the environment simple and pure: light, clean cloth, no ostentation.

    Funeral (Antyeṣṭi)

    • Perform a simple, non‑violent cremation as early as practical.
    • Avoid non‑Jain rites (e.g., rituals claiming to change the departed soul’s destiny). Use the occasion for restraint, prayer, and compassion.
    • If possible, direct expenses from showy ceremonies to jīvadayā (saving living beings), panjarāpol, education, or health aid.

Daily practices in the days after

    • Navkār Mantra jāp (as per capacity, e.g., 108 times), sāmāyik, pratikramaṇ, svādhyāy, and chaityavandan.
    • Do śānti‑pāṭha/vidhān and offer dān with pure intent. The benefit purifies the doer; it does not alter the departed one’s karma.
    • Live simply: avoid celebration, entertainment, and unnecessary new purchases for some time; focus on study and virtue.

    Tradition notes

    • Śvetāmbara: Many families do Snātra Pūjā, Śānti‑kalash, or Siddhachakra Pūjā and a simple prabhāvanā. Community customs like a “tēravi” meal exist, but scripture emphasizes simplicity and spiritual focus.
    • Digambara: Emphasis on sāmāyik, svādhyāy, śānti‑pāṭha, and dān. Some communities ask the closest mourner to refrain from image‑worship for a few days; this is a community custom, not a core scriptural rule.
    • “No green” (avoiding leafy vegetables) on the death tithi or for a few days is a community practice to reduce hiṁsā; it is optional.

    Annual remembrance (tithi)

    • On the parent’s death tithi each year: observe a fast or eat very simple sāttvik food, do pratikramaṇ, Navkār jāp, svādhyāy, and jīvadayā. Dedicate the puṇya with a quiet śānti‑pāṭha.

    What to avoid

    • Costly show, superstition, and any rite claiming to “transfer” karma.
    • Harmful offerings (flowers wasted in bulk, leather, silk, etc.). Prefer cleanliness, restraint, and compassion.

    Helpful verses to recite

    • Navkār Mantra:
“ṇamō arihantāṇaṁ, ṇamō siddhāṇaṁ, ṇamō āyariyāṇaṁ, ṇamō uvajjhāyāṇaṁ, ṇamō lōē savva‑sāhūṇaṁ.” Meaning: Bowing to Arihants, Siddhas, Āchāryas, Upādhyāyas, and all Sādhus destroys sins and leads toward liberation.
