Why should you to dharm during paryushan

    12 months ago 60

Paryushan is the most sacred time for a Jain to turn inward and strengthen dharm. Doing dharm in these days matters because:

    • It purifies karma: extra focus on fasting, pratikraman, dhyān, and study helps stop new karmas (samvar) and shed old ones (nirjarā).
    • It rebuilds Right Faith–Right Knowledge–Right Conduct: we reset our life to the true Jain path for the coming year.
    • It cultivates forgiveness and peace: we ask and grant forgiveness (Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ), healing relationships and calming passions.
    • It deepens ahiṁsā: careful living, careful speech, and careful food choices reduce harm to even the smallest life-forms.
    • It strengthens vows: we practice restraint, truth, non‑stealing, celibacy/chastity, and non‑possessiveness with special care.
    • It brings community merit: collective pratikraman, svādhyāy, and sevā create a strong spiritual environment at home and in sangh.
    • It follows tradition: during the monsoon (chaturmās) sādhus/sādhvīs stay in one place, and śrāvaks focus on sādhanā—this is the ideal period for intense practice.

    How each tradition observes

    • Śvetāmbara: 8 days of Paryushan ending in Samvatsari (annual atonement and forgiveness).
    • Digambara: 10 days of Daśa‑lakṣaṇa Parva, each day devoted to one supreme virtue: Kṣamā, Mārdava, Ārjava, Śauch, Satya, Saṁyam, Tap, Tyāg, Ākinchan, Brahmacharya.

Simple ways to do dharm during Paryushan

    • Daily pratikraman and Samvatsari/Kṣamāvaṇī pratikraman
    • Fasting as per capacity (ayambil, upavās, attham, etc.)
    • Svādhyāy of scriptures, listening to pravachan, chanting Navkār Mantra
    • Maitrī‑bhāv, kṣamā‑bhāv; speak softly, avoid gossip and anger
    • Limit possessions and indulgences; practice charity and kindness
    • No night‑eating; carefulness in water/food use; protect all life

    For short, clear guides:

    • Different days and virtues (Daśa‑lakṣaṇa)

Essence: Do dharm in Paryushan to cleanse the soul, live pure ahiṁsā, and renew your Jain way for the whole year. Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ.
