According to Jain tradition, Bhagwan Mahavir Swami, the 24th Tirthankara, was born on the 13th day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra (Chaitra Shukla Trayodashi) in the year 599 BCE at Kundalpur (near Vaishali, in present-day Bihar, India). This auspicious day is celebrated as Mahavir Janma Kalyanak by Jains around the world.
