In Jainism, a Tirthankara is a spiritual teacher and savior who has conquered saṃsāra, the cycle of birth and death, and has attained perfect knowledge (kevala jnana). The word "Tirthankara" literally means "ford-maker," one who creates a path (tirtha) across the river of worldly existence, helping others to cross over to liberation (moksha).

There are 24 Tirthankaras in this time cycle, with Rishabhanatha being the first and Mahavira being the twenty-fourth and last Tirthankara of the current cycle. Tirthankaras are revered as supreme spiritual guides who establish the fourfold Jain community (monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen) and teach the path of right faith, right knowledge, and right conduct (the three jewels of Jainism). They are not considered creators or gods, but enlightened beings who show the way to liberation.
