Things to take care during Aangi
Below are simple, traditional points to take care of during Aangi (Shri Aangi/Angi) in a Jain temple. They preserve ahimsa, shuddhi, and maryada.
Inner bhav and personal shuddhi
- Do Samayik-bhav: calm mind, no anger, pride, deceit, or greed.
- Take simple pachhakhan (resolve) to do Aangi with care and non‑violence.
- Bathe, wear clean, modest, preferably white clothes. Remove leather items.
Time, place, and silence
- Generally done in the morning after Snatra/abhishek and before aarti, per your temple’s maryada.
- Enter garbhagriha only if permitted; maintain silence or soft jaap of Navkar.
- Respect the vedi; do not step on it or turn your back to the idol unnecessarily.
Materials (dravyas)
- Use clean, filtered water (with a fine cloth), pure chandan/kesar; avoid honey and anything that increases himsa.
- Prefer dry, non‑plucked samagri where possible (akshat, kesar, ashtagandh, etc.). Avoid synthetic/glittery powders and strong chemicals.
- Keep separate, clean cloths (angaluchan) and bowls only for puja use.
Handling the murti
- Hands clean and dry; remove sharp rings/nails that can scratch the idol.
- First gently wipe off previous Aangi; never scrape. Use soft, damp angaluchan.
- Apply from top to bottom, lightly; do not cover the eyes, auspicious marks, or lakshan too thickly.
- Make only the traditional, simple designs/symbols per your local achar; avoid “show” or over‑decoration.
Sequence (typical)
- After Jal abhishek and Nav‑Ang kesar puja, do Aangi with chandan/kesar.
- Then, as per maryada, do vastra‑abhushan or ashta‑mangal symbols, and conclude with stuti/namaskar.
Ahimsa and cleanliness
- Keep the area clean and dry; wipe any spillage immediately.
- Do not use flowers/leaves if your sangh discourages plucking; never crush insects.
- Dispose of used dravya respectfully (designated pit/compost)—not in drains.
Maryada differences (brief)
- Shwetambar: Aangi may include more colorful patterns and, in some temples, vastra/ornaments for the idol.
- Digambar: Aangi is kept very simple—pure chandan/kesar and ashta‑mangal symbols; no dressing of the idol. Follow your mandir’s specific rules.
- Entry to garbhagriha, eligibility (e.g., during menstruation or certain health conditions), and who may touch the idol vary by tradition and temple; follow your local achar strictly.
Safety and decorum
- Keep diyas away from cloth and powders; handle ladders safely with help.
- No eating, phone use, or photography in/near the sanctum if prohibited.
Spiritual focus
- Keep remembrance of the 24 Tirthankars’ virtues; let Aangi become a cause for inner purity, not attachment to decoration.
