    What to read in samayik

    12 months ago 94

Here is a simple, authentic guide to what you can read in Samayik (48 minutes of equanimity). I’ve kept it faithful to Jain tradition, with notes for Śvetāmbara and Digambara where they differ.

    Core order (works for everyone)

    • Navkār Mantra (Namokār Mantra) — with deep reverence to the Pañca Parameṣṭhī.
    • Saamayik pachchakkhāṇ (taking the Samayik vow) — resolve to stay in equanimity, avoid himsā, asatya, adatta-dāna, maithuna, and aparigraha mentally, verbally, and physically during Samayik.
    • Iriyāvaḥiyam (reflection on harm done in movement) — ask forgiveness for any harm caused while moving.
    • Tassa‑uttari (asking pardon for faults in conduct) and Annattha — short confessional reflections.
    • Logassa (Chauvisantho) — praise of the 24 Tīrthaṅkaras.
    • Kṣamā‑pāṇā verses — Khamemi savve jīvā; Savve jīvā khamantu me; Mitti me savva bhūesu; Veraṃ majjha na keṇai; Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ.
    • Kāyotsarga (still meditation) — remain absolutely still, aware of the pure soul separate from body, speech, and mind.
    • Svādhyāy or dhyān — read a short, pure Jain text or contemplate core tattvas (jīva, ajīva, āsrava, bandha, saṃvara, nirjarā, mokṣa).
    • Pratyākhyāna (resolution) — make a firm resolve to avoid specific faults hereafter.
    • Samāpana — conclude Samayik respectfully and return from the vow.

Helpful sutras and texts to read inside Samayik

    • Namokār Mantra, Chattāri Maṅgalaṃ.
    • Iriyāvaḥiyam, Tassa‑uttari, Annattha, Logassa (Śvetāmbara Avashyakas).
    • Short pāṭh on the Pañca‑Anuvratas and their 25 Atičāras.
    • A few aphorisms from Tattvārtha‑sūtra (on the seven tattvas).
    • Verses from Ratnakaraṇḍa Śrāvakācāra (especially for household conduct).
    • Uvāsaggaharaṃ or Bhaktāmara can be read in a non‑musical, calm way if your tradition allows; keep the mind in sama‑bhāva (pure equanimity).

    Śvetāmbara-specific notes

    • The “Six Āvaśyakas” framework is common: 1) Samayik, 2) Cauvvisantho/Logassa, 3) Vandana, 4) Pratikraman‑Ālochana, 5) Kāyotsarga, 6) Pratyākhyāna.
    • Common recitations include: Iriyāvaḥiyam, Tassa‑uttari, Annattha, Logassa, Karemi Bhante Samaiyam (Samayik vow), Ālochana, Abbhutthio, Ichchāmi Khamāsamaṇo, etc.
    • Keep it simple if you’re new: Namokār → Iriyāvaḥiyam → Tassa‑uttari → Logassa → Kṣamā‑pāṇā → Kāyotsarga → short svādhyāy → Pratyākhyāna.

    Digambara-specific notes

    • Panchindiya (praise of the five supreme beings), Namokār, Logassa are commonly used.
    • Svādhyāy from Ratnakaraṇḍa Śrāvakācāra, Tattvārtha‑sūtra, or Mulācāra is encouraged.
    • Kāyotsarga (standing or seated) and pure contemplation on the soul (ātmā‑anuprekṣā) are central; stotras may be read in a detached, non‑musical manner.

    Two ready‑to‑use Samayik tracks

    A) Short beginner Samayik (about 15–20 min)

    • Namokār Mantra 5–9 times
    • Saamayik pachchakkhāṇ (brief vow)
    • Iriyāvaḥiyam + Tassa‑uttari
    • Logassa (Chauvisantho)
    • Kṣamā‑pāṇā verses
    • Kāyotsarga 3–5 minutes
    • Pratyākhyāna and samāpana

    B) Full 48‑minute Samayik

    • Navkār + Chattāri Maṅgalaṃ
    • Saamayik pachchakkhāṇ
    • Iriyāvaḥiyam, Tassa‑uttari, Annattha
    • Logassa (Chauvisantho)
    • Ālochana/Pratikraman in brief (confession of day’s faults)
    • Kṣamā‑pāṇā verses
    • Kāyotsarga 8–12 minutes
    • Svādhyāy: a few verses from Tattvārtha‑sūtra or Ratnakaraṇḍa Śrāvakācāra
    • Pratyākhyāna
    • Samāpana

    Important spiritual tips

    • Keep sama‑bhāva: no rāga–dveṣa, no musical or emotional excitations; read calmly.
    • Prefer sutras and shāstra‑svādhyāy over songs. If you read stotras, do so in a neutral, steady tone.
    • Sit clean, simple clothes, face east or north, keep place quiet, avoid disturbance.
    • If you know your specific gaccha/sangha vidhi, follow that exactly.

May your Samayik be steady, pure, and truly equanimous.
