    complete meaning of Uvvasaghram stotra

    12 months ago 144

Below is a simple, faithful, stanza‑wise meaning (arth) of the commonly recited 8‑stanza Uvasaggaharam Stotra (in praise of Bhagwan Parshvanath). It preserves the traditional intent found in Jain practice. Minor wordings vary by tradition; the core sense remains the same.

    1) I bow to Bhagwan Parshvanath, who removes all upsarga (obstacles and afflictions), who is free from karmic bondage, who destroys all inner poisons (passions), and who is the abode of auspiciousness and welfare.

    2) One who remembers and holds the sacred protection of Parshvanath with pure faith becomes calm and secure. The harms of evil influences, diseases, epidemics, and fierce fevers are pacified by his grace.

    3) By taking refuge in Parshvanath with a pure heart, the devotee’s inner fears and outer troubles subside. His remembrance becomes a cooling rain over the burning forest of worldly suffering.

    4) Whoever reveres the qualities of the Jina and honors Parshvanath with devotion attains success in righteous undertakings. Obstacles fall away when worship is done with sincerity and restraint.

    5) Knowing true refuge as purity of conduct and right faith, one becomes free from many bondages. Through Parshvanath’s remembrance, the knots of delusion loosen and the mind turns inward toward peace.

    6) Dangers such as fear, hostility, calamities, and sudden upheavals lose their force for those protected by the compassion of the Jina. Supported by right faith, one remains unshaken amidst disturbances.

    7) Remembering Parshvanath with humility destroys the roots of sin and misfortune. Past demerits weaken, present hardships lighten, and future fears dissolve as one’s conduct becomes purer.

    8) I repeatedly bow to Bhagwan Parshvanath, beloved of devas and humans, lotus of compassion, ocean of auspicious qualities. May his grace remove my obstacles and establish me in equanimity, non‑violence, and right conduct.

    Notes on traditions:

    • Authorship and usage: Traditionally attributed to Acharya Bhadrabahu and devoted to Bhagwan Parshvanath. Both Shvetambar and Digambar traditions revere and recite it.
    • Stanza count: In most Shvetambar and many Digambar practices, 8 stanzas are recited. Some lineages include an additional “phala‑śruti” (benefit) stanza or have minor textual variations; some omit that extra stanza to keep only the core hymn. The meaning above follows the standard 8‑stanza practice.
    • Essence preserved: The stotra is not for worldly show or fear‑driven rituals; its heart is purification of passions, removal of obstacles to dharma, and progress toward samyaktva (right faith), saiyam (restraint), and shuddhi (inner purity).
