Types of yogs?
In Jain Dharma, “yoga” means the soul’s activity through mind, speech, and body. The main types are:
- Mano-yoga (mind): thinking, intentions, mental attention.
- Vachana-yoga (speech): speaking, words, verbal expressions.
- Kaya-yoga (body): physical movements and actions.
Key notes:
- These three together are called Triyoga. Through them, karmas flow in (āsrava) and can bind (bandha) if mixed with passions (kashāya). Practicing restraint stops new influx (saṃvara).
- By moral quality, activities are often described as:
- To control the three yogas, Jain scriptures prescribe the three Guptis (controls): Mano-gupti, Vachana-gupti, Kaya-gupti.
Digambar and Shvetambar:
- Both traditions accept the three yogas (mano, vachana, kaya). Terms and emphasis may vary slightly, but the doctrine is the same.
