What is the meaning of the 14 dreams of Trishala Mata
Here are the traditional Jain meanings (arth) of Mata Trishalā’s 14 auspicious dreams, exactly as understood in Jain Dharma (Śvetāmbara tradition, as narrated in Kalpasūtra). Each dream foretold the supreme greatness of the soul to be born (Bhagwān Mahāvīr):
1) Elephant (four-tusked Airāvata) — Majesty, spiritual strength and perfect control; the four tusks signify the fourfold saṅgha (monks, nuns, śrāvaks, śrāvikās).
2) Bull — Steadfastness in dharma; the child will be a great spiritual teacher and guide of noble beings.
3) Lion — Fearlessness, supreme power and sovereignty over inner enemies (kashāyas).
4) Goddess Śrī (Lakṣmī) — Splendour, prosperity and auspicious glory that accompanies true dharma.
5) Garland of divine flowers — Fragrance of his preaching spreading everywhere; universal respect and fame.
6) Full Moon — Peace, serenity and beneficence to all living beings; pleasing and radiant persona.
7) Sun — Dispelling of darkness: his teaching will destroy ignorance and passions.
8) Great Flag (Dhvaja) — Eminent leadership and honor; he will be a revered standard-bearer of religion.
9) Full Kalasha (silver/golden urn) — Purity and perfection of all virtues; compassion overflowing.
10) Lotus Lake — Purity with detachment; countless souls will blossom through his guidance and move toward liberation.
11) Milky Ocean — Vastness of spiritual attainment; he will lead beings across saṃsāra toward moksha.
12) Celestial Airplane (Deva-vimān) — Devas will honor and obey his spiritual message; universal reverence.
13) Heap of Gems — Infinite virtues, right knowledge and supreme merit.
14) Smokeless Fire — Pure, steady spiritual brilliance; burning of karmas without impurity; restoration of true dharma.
Notes on traditions:
- Śvetāmbara texts (e.g., Kalpasūtra) recount 14 dreams of Queen Trishalā at the conception of Mahāvīr.
- Digambara texts generally describe 16 auspicious dreams for a Tīrthaṅkara’s mother. The spiritual purport, however, remains the same: they announce an exalted, world-benefiting soul.
