which is most powerful mantra for jap

    12 months ago 534

In Jain Dharma, the most powerful and universal mantra for jap is the Namokār (Navkār) Mantra. It salutes the Panch Parmeshti and is accepted in both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions.

    Original Prākrit text:

    • ṇamo arihantāṇaṃ
    • ṇamo siddhāṇaṃ
    • ṇamo āyariyāṇaṃ
    • ṇamo uvajjhāyāṇaṃ
    • ṇamo loe savva-sāhūṇaṃ
    • eso pañca namokkāro
    • savva pāvappaṇāsano
    • maṅgalāṇaṃ ca savvesiṃ
    • paḍhamaṃ havai maṅgalaṃ

    Arth (simple meaning):

    • I bow to the Arihants (embodied Omniscients).
    • I bow to the Siddhas (liberated, perfected souls).
    • I bow to the Āchāryas (spiritual heads).
    • I bow to the Upādhyāyas (scriptural teachers).
    • I bow to all Sādhus and Sādhvīs.
    • This five-fold obeisance destroys all sins. Among all auspicious things, it is the foremost.

    Notes on traditions:

    • Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara revere this mantra equally. Minor pronunciation differences (e.g., Ayariyāṇam/Ayariyāṇam, Uvajjhāyāṇam/Uvazzhāyāṇam) do not change the meaning or intent.

How to do jap (keeping it authentic and simple):

    • Bhaav: Chant with samyak-bhāva (right reverence), focusing on the virtues of the five supreme beings—not asking for worldly gains.
    • Time: Daily at dawn/ dusk, before any religious activity, or whenever the mind seeks steadiness.
    • Posture: Sit steadily (padmāsan/ardha-padmāsan or simply upright), keep the spine straight, and remain non-violent and truthful in thought during jap.
    • Count: You may use a mālā if helpful, but quality of inner reverence matters more than number.
    • Reflection: After chanting, pause for a moment to internalize the virtues—vītarāgatā (passionlessness), ahiṃsā, truth, humility.

    Essence:

    • Its “power” lies in purifying bhāva and weakening karmic bondage by venerating pure qualities, not in seeking favors. It is the first and foremost maṅgal in Jainism.
