In Jain tradition, “Sumitra” is a character from our kathā (devotional/teaching stories). The story is preserved in Jain narrative collections and is accepted as spiritually true within the Jain paramparā. Its purpose is to teach the fruits of samayik, pratikraman, and keeping one’s vrata (like paushadh) with steadfastness. Modern historical verification is not the focus of such kathās.

Both Digambar and Shvetambar traditions narrate and use such stories for dharmic instruction; no major sectarian difference is noted for this Sumitra kathā.
