Why not eating potatoes
In Jainism, not eating potatoes is rooted in the principle of ahimsa (non-violence). Jains strive to minimize harm to all living beings, including the tiniest forms of life. Potatoes, as well as other root vegetables like onions, garlic, carrots, and radishes, are generally avoided for the following reasons:
- Uprooting Causes Harm: Harvesting root vegetables requires uprooting the entire plant, which leads to the destruction of the whole organism, not just a part of it.
- Many Lives in Roots: Roots often harbor countless microscopic organisms and life forms. When root vegetables are harvested and consumed, it results in the killing of these many lives, which goes against the Jain vow of non-violence.
- Regrowth: Unlike fruits or leaves, which can be plucked without killing the plant, harvesting roots prevents the plant from regenerating.
Because of these reasons, strict Jains avoid eating potatoes and other root vegetables, choosing foods that involve the least possible harm to living beings.
