Is alcohol allowed in Jainism
In Jainism, the consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited. Jain teachings emphasize ahimsa (non-violence) and self-control (samyama), and alcohol is considered harmful because:
- Intoxication leads to loss of self-control: Alcohol impairs judgment, increasing the likelihood of committing violence or sinful acts.
- Fermentation involves microscopic life: The production and consumption of alcohol involves the destruction of countless microorganisms, which goes against the Jain principle of non-violence toward all living beings.
- Obstacles to spiritual progress: Alcohol consumption clouds the mind and is seen as an obstacle to spiritual growth and right conduct.
For these reasons, Jains are advised to completely abstain from alcohol in order to follow the path of right conduct (samya karyan) and uphold the principle of ahimsa.
