what is kalpsutra
Kalpasutra is a revered Jain scripture of the Shwetambar tradition, traditionally compiled by Acharya Bhadrabahu. It is most well known for being publicly recited during Paryushan.
What it contains
- Jina-charitra: short life-stories of the 24 Tirthankaras, with detailed narration of Bhagwan Mahavir’s five kalyanaks (especially Janma Kalyanak).
- Sthaviravali: the lineage of early Jain acharyas after Mahavir, preserving the parampara.
- Samachari: guidance for the disciplined conduct of monks and nuns, especially for the Chaturmas period.
Why it is important
- Inspires right faith, repentance, self-restraint, and non‑violence by reflecting on the lives of the Tirthankaras.
- Keeps the historical memory and monastic discipline of the Jain sangh alive.
- Its recitation during Paryushan helps laypeople strengthen vows, fasting, and pratikraman.
Note on traditions
- Shwetambar Jains accept and regularly recite the Kalpasutra.
- Digambar Jains do not include Kalpasutra in their canon; they revere other texts for biography and conduct.
