Want to know about priyadarshana ( mahavir bhagwans daughter)

    12 months ago 1417

    Priyadarshana in Jain tradition

    • Identity: Priyadarshana is remembered as the only daughter of Bhagwan Mahavir and Devi Yashoda. After Bhagwan Mahavir accepted diksha, she continued to live as a shravika (lay follower).
    • Name variations in scriptures:
    - Shvetambar tradition: The Kalpa-sutra and related texts commonly mention the daughter with the name Anojjā (or Anojjā/Anujjā). Many later Shvetambar works also use the name Priyadarshana. - Digambar tradition: She is referred to as Priyadarshana. Both traditions accept that Mahavir had a daughter.
    • Marriage and later events: Priyadarshana was married to Jamāli (Jamali). Jamali later became a monk under Bhagwan Mahavir but is known for causing an early schism due to a wrong doctrinal claim. This episode is often noted to explain the importance of right understanding and discipline in the sangh.
    • Spiritual note: There are no independent sermons or separate textual teachings attributed specifically to Priyadarshana in the Agamas. Her life is remembered respectfully in connection with Bhagwan Mahavir’s household period and as a reminder that even those close to the Tirthankar must follow samyak darshan, jnan, and charitra with care.
    • Points of agreement and nuance:
    - Both Shvetambar and Digambar traditions agree Bhagwan Mahavir married Yashoda and had a daughter. - The main differences are in the name used (Anojjā vs. Priyadarshana) and minor narrative details; the spiritual essence remains the same: reverence for the Tirthankar’s family and the primacy of right conduct.
