peanut chutney is allowed?
Short answer: Generally yes.
Peanuts (groundnuts) are seeds/legumes, not root-vegetables. So peanut chutney is usually allowed for Jains, provided you follow these basics:
- No onion, garlic, ginger or any other root/tuber.
- Make it fresh the same day and eat only in daylight; don’t keep leftovers.
- Use clean, filtered/boiled water; no fermentation, vinegar, or stale curd.
- During Paryushan/Das Lakshan or if you’ve taken stricter vows, keep food simpler; many avoid green leafy garnishes (like coriander/curry leaves). Follow your local sangh/guru’s guidance.
Note on traditions:
- Both Shvetambar and Digambar lay followers generally allow legumes like peanuts.
- Some very strict practitioners avoid items harvested by uprooting the whole plant; they may choose to avoid peanuts as a personal vow.
