can i used stored dried peanut chutney in paryushan with roti?
Short answer: No.
- During Paryushan, most Jains avoid all kandmool (underground foods). Peanut (groundnut) grows underground, so peanut chutney is not taken.
- Also, stored/old items are avoided in Paryushan. Dry chutneys and pickles kept from earlier days are generally not used.
- Roti is fine if prepared fresh the same day and eaten only in daylight (no night eating).
Simple alternatives with roti (freshly made the same day):
- Plain ghee and a little salt
- Simple moong dal or tuvar dal (without onion/garlic, ginger, turmeric, or leafy greens)
- Freshly made dry coconut–til (sesame) powder with rock salt and cumin (no peanuts), prepared and consumed the same day
Notes on traditions:
- Shvetāmbara Paryushan (8 days): Strictly avoid roots and also avoid stored foods; many also avoid green leafy vegetables.
- Digambara Das-Lakshan (10 days): Same spirit of austerity; roots and stored foods are avoided, with very simple, daylight-only meals.
