Why do we don't eat after sunset
In Jainism, it is recommended not to eat after sunset as a practice of ahimsa (non-violence) and self-discipline. The primary reason is that, after sunset, the number of microorganisms and tiny living beings in the environment increases, especially in food and water. Eating after dark increases the risk of unintentionally harming or consuming these living beings, which goes against the Jain principle of non-violence.
Additionally, avoiding food after sunset helps in controlling desires and maintaining simplicity (aparigraha). It is also believed to support better health and digestion. This practice is especially observed strictly by Jain monks, nuns, and many lay followers.
