How to come over vikar bhav
In Jainism, "vikar bhav" refers to impure or passionate states of mind, such as anger (krodh), pride (maan), deceit (maya), and greed (lobh). Overcoming these is essential for spiritual progress and ultimately for attaining liberation (moksha). Here are some Jain teachings and practices to overcome vikar bhav:
- Right Knowledge (Samyak Jnan):
Study Jain scriptures and teachings to understand the true nature of the soul and the bondage caused by passions.
- Right Faith (Samyak Darshan):
Develop faith in the Jain path and believe in the principles of non-violence (ahimsa), truth (satya), non-stealing (asteya), celibacy (brahmacharya), and non-possessiveness (aparigraha).
- Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra):
Practice self-restraint, observe vows (vratas), and follow ethical living to reduce passions.
- Meditation (Dhyana):
Regular meditation helps in self-control and awareness of one’s thoughts, enabling one to recognize and gradually eliminate vikar bhav.
- Pratikraman:
Daily introspection, confession, and repentance for wrongdoings help purify the mind and reduce passions.
- Company of the Virtuous (Satsang):
Associate with spiritually advanced people, monks, and nuns, as their guidance and presence inspire self-restraint.
- Forgiveness (Kshama):
Practice forgiveness towards all beings and oneself. Forgiveness dissolves anger and pride.
- Detachment (Vairagya):
Cultivate detachment from material possessions and relationships to weaken the hold of greed and attachment.
- Awareness of Karmic Consequences:
Reflect on how passions bind the soul with karma and hinder spiritual progress.
- Chanting and Prayer:
Recite sacred Jain mantras, like the Navkar Mantra, to calm the mind and invoke spiritual strength.
By consistently applying these principles, one can gradually overcome vikar bhav and progress towards purity of the soul.
