    Pancakes during Paryushan

    12 months ago 100

    Short answer

    • If you are doing Upvās, Atthai, or Ayambil: pancakes are not allowed.
    • If you are doing Ekāsan/Biyāsan with simple food: avoid pancakes; prefer plain, minimally prepared food.
    • If you are not fasting but observing basic Paryushan food-discipline: you may eat only a very simple, eggless, non‑fermented “pancake” (like a plain wheat puda), cooked with maximum care for ahiṃsā and maryādā.

    Why

    • Paryushan emphasizes tapa (austerity), simplicity, and ahiṃsā. Fried, rich, fermented, or fancy items reduce saiyam.
    • Many maryādās avoid during Paryushan: root vegetables, green leafy vegetables, fermented items (curd, yeast breads, dosa/idhli batter), sprouts, honey, eggs, stale/outside food, and eating after sunset. Boiled/filtered water only in daylight. ( jainknowledge.com)

    Guidance by vow

    • Upvās/Atthai: no food (and traditionally no water) from sunrise to sunrise. So, no pancakes. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Ayambil: one bland meal; no oil/ghee, milk/curd, sugar, spices, fruits/vegetables. Pancakes don’t fit. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Ekāsan/Biyāsan: one or two simple meals before sunset; prefer plain, minimally processed items (roti/khichdi). Skipping pancakes maintains the spirit of tapa. ( jainknowledge.com)

If you still wish to make a Paryushan‑friendly “puda”

    • Only when you are not fasting and your family/sangh maryādā allows.
    • Strictly eggless; avoid honey and fermentation (no yeast, no curd/yogurt, no sour batter).
    • Keep it very simple: whole‑wheat flour + water; a thin batter; cook on a clean tawa with as little oil/ghee as your maryādā permits; eat before sunset. Do not add fruits/greens/spices if your maryādā avoids them these days. ( jainknowledge.com)

    Important

    • Always follow the pachchakkhān (pachkhan) you have taken for the day and your local maryādā taught by your guru/saṅgh. For simple guides on fasting types and pachkhan, see:
