In Jainism, the pure state of the Aatma (soul), known as Siddha (liberated soul) or Shuddha Aatma (pure soul), is completely free from karma. In its original, intrinsic nature, the Aatma is characterized by infinite knowledge (anant jnan), infinite perception (anant darshan), infinite bliss (anant sukh), and infinite energy (anant virya), and is entirely devoid of karmic bondage.

While embodied and bound in the cycle of birth and death (samsara), the soul is covered by karmic particles. However, the true nature or essential quality (svabhav) of the soul always remains pure and untouched by karma at its core. Only when all karmas are completely eradicated through right faith (samyak darshan), right knowledge (samyak jnan), and right conduct (samyak charitra), does the soul exist in a state totally free from karma.
