I had cauliflower during paryushan :((((
It’s okay. Don’t panic or feel crushed. During Paryushan our aim is inner purity, carefulness, and repentance. If you ate cauliflower by mistake, make it a step toward more awareness.
What to do now (simple, traditional way)
- Alochana (confession): Accept calmly—“I ate cauliflower during Paryushan due to oversight.”
- Pratikraman (repentance): Sit for a short pratikraman or samayik today. Recite Khamemi Savve Jiva and Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṃ with true feeling.
- Pratyakhyan (resolve): Take a small vow for the remaining days—no green vegetables, eat only in daylight, only boiled/filtered water, and keep meals simple.
- Kayotsarga: 2–5 minutes of stillness to let go of guilt and steady the mind.
- Daya and Ahimsa in action: Be extra careful while buying/cooking food; avoid items with higher himsa or hidden life.
About cauliflower during Paryushan
- Śvetāmbara practice: Many avoid all “green vegetables/shāk” during Paryushan, which commonly includes cauliflower and cabbage due to subtle life and many florets.
- Digambara practice: Focus is during Daśa‑lakṣaṇa; many also keep strict food restraints. In both traditions, carefulness and repentance remove the fault when done sincerely.
Remember: Jain Dharma emphasizes intention, vigilance, and honest pratikraman. Sincere repentance lightens the karma; use this as a gentle reminder to be more alert.
