    14 swapna of mahavir swami

    12 months ago 1332

The 14 swapna (auspicious dreams) seen by Mata Trishalā before the birth of Bhagwān Mahāvīr (on the night of Garbha‑Kalyāṇak) are as follows, with their traditional meanings. These are given as per the Śvetāmbara tradition.

    1) Airāvat elephant

    • Meaning: Extraordinary strength, dignity and protection.

    2) Bull

    • Meaning: Steadfast dharma, firmness, and leadership.

    3) Lion

    • Meaning: Fearlessness and supreme sovereignty over passions.

    4) Goddess Śrī (Lakṣmī) seated on a lotus

    • Meaning: Divine prosperity, auspiciousness, and glory.

    5) Garland of fragrant flowers

    • Meaning: Pure fame and the spread of virtue in all directions.

    6) Full moon

    • Meaning: Serenity, coolness, and gentle spiritual radiance.

    7) Sun

    • Meaning: Brilliant enlightenment that dispels ignorance.

    8) Victory-flag (dhwaj)

    • Meaning: Sure victory of truth and dharma.

    9) Golden vase filled with clear water (suvarṇa-kalaśa)

    • Meaning: Purity, abundance, and auspicious fulfilment.

    10) Lake full of lotuses (padma-sarovar)

    • Meaning: Detachment, inner beauty, and purity blossoming.

    11) Vast ocean (sāgara)

    • Meaning: Depth, boundlessness, and universal compassion.

    12) Divine celestial palace/vehicle (vimāna)

    • Meaning: Divine honour, reverence from devas, and exalted status.

    13) Heap of jewels (ratna-rāśi)

    • Meaning: Wealth of virtues and infinite spiritual qualities.

    14) Smokeless fire (nirdhuma agni)

    • Meaning: Pure spiritual energy and flawless tapas without impurity.

    Notes on traditions:

    • Śvetāmbara: Mothers of Tīrthankaras see 14 dreams (listed above).
    • Digambara: Mothers see 16 dreams; along with the above, two more are included (commonly described as a divine throne and a pair of fish). Order and wording may vary slightly. The spiritual intent remains the same: the soul to be born will be supremely virtuous, world-guiding, and a future Tīrthankara.

These dreams are interpreted by learned elders as sure signs of the descent of a Tīrthankara-soul and are celebrated as part of Garbha‑Kalyāṇak.
