Meaning of Aatma
In Jainism, "Aatma" (or Atma) refers to the soul or the self. It is considered the true essence of every living being. According to Jain philosophy, the Aatma is eternal, conscious, and possesses infinite knowledge, perception, bliss, and energy in its pure state. However, due to the accumulation of karmas (karmic particles), the soul is bound to the cycle of birth and death (samsara). The ultimate goal in Jainism is to purify the Aatma by removing karmas through right faith (samyak darshan), right knowledge (samyak jnana), and right conduct (samyak charitra), leading to liberation (moksha). In its liberated state, the soul attains infinite bliss and is free from all worldly suffering.
