How many taps are there total in jain
Total tapas (austerities) in Jainism: 12
Six external (bahya tapas):
- Anashana: fasting
- Unodari: eating less than hunger
- Vritti-sankshepa: limiting kinds/quantity/place/time of food
- Rasaparityaga: renouncing tasty flavors
- Kayaklesha: willingly bearing bodily hardship for purity
- Sanlinata (Sallinata): seclusion and restraint of the senses/posture
Six internal (abhyantara tapas):
- Prayaśchitta: repentance and atonement
- Vinaya: humility and reverence
- Vaiyāvṛttya: selfless service to ascetics and the needy
- Svādhyāya: scriptural study
- Vyutsarga (Kayotsarga): letting go of attachment to the body
- Dhyāna: right meditation on the soul
Note: Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara traditions accept these twelve; only minor wording/ordering varies, not the essence.
