How often to have sex
In Jain Dharma, there is no fixed number for “how often.” Guidance is about purity and restraint (brahmacharya), not counting frequency.
- For monks and nuns: complete celibacy always.
- For householders: limited, ethical conduct—only with one’s lawful spouse, with self‑control and responsibility, primarily for family life, not indulgence.
Simple Jain guidelines for a householder
- Practice restraint: reduce frequency over time to support spiritual progress.
- Observe brahmacharya on vrata days (e.g., on upavās/poshad, during Paryushan, and other key observances).
- Avoid any form of violence or harm (mental or physical), deceit, or coercion—conduct must be calm, consensual, and non‑harmful.
- Guard the senses: avoid stimulants, pornography, and habits that inflame passions.
- Keep fidelity; avoid thoughts and acts outside marriage.
- As you advance in the 11 pratimās, you move toward greater celibacy; many laypeople adopt periodic or long‑term celibacy vows.
Key idea: Jainism does not prescribe a schedule; it asks you to live dharmically—limit and refine sexual activity, aim to lessen it, and observe full celibacy on sacred days, with the ideal of complete celibacy as the highest vow.
