    Tap na bhed

    one year ago 91

In Jainism, "Tap" (तप) refers to austerities or penances undertaken to purify the soul, destroy karmic bonds, and progress on the path of liberation (moksha). "Tap na bhed" means "types of austerities".

There are mainly two types of Tap (austerities) in Jain philosophy:

    1. Bahy (External) Tapas – External austerities, which relate to physical acts:

    1. Anashan – Fasting (not taking any food). 2. Unodari – Eating less than one's appetite. 3. Vritti Sankshep – Limiting the number of food items or sources. 4. Rasa Parityag – Giving up favorite foods (taste renunciation). 5. Kaya-klesha – Physical endurance (bearing hardship, like cold/heat). 6. Sanlinata – Withdrawal or solitude (limiting movement or activity).

    1. Antaranga (Internal) Tapas – Internal austerities, which relate to mental and spiritual discipline:

    1. Prayaschitta – Repentance or atonement for wrongdoings. 2. Vinay – Humility and respect. 3. Vaiyavritya – Selfless service to monks, nuns, the needy, or the sick. 4. Swadhyay – Study of scriptures and self-reflection. 5. Vyutsarga – Renunciation, particularly of passions. 6. Dhyana – Meditation and concentration.

Practicing both external and internal Tap is highly encouraged in Jainism, as it helps in shedding karma and moving towards spiritual liberation. Internal austerities are considered superior, as they purify the mind and soul.
