What nuts can you eat at Paryushan

    12 months ago 485

During Paryushan (and Das‑Lakshan), most Jains keep a very ahinsa-based, simple diet. As a guideline for “nuts,” the following is commonly observed:

Generally allowed (if clean, insect‑free, plain, and taken within your food-vows):

    • Almonds (badam)
    • Cashew (kaju)
    • Walnut (akhrot)
    • Pistachio (pista)
    • Pine nuts (chilgoza)
    • Hazelnut
    • Chironji/Charoli
    • Dried coconut (copra)
    • Makhana/foxnut (well‑cleaned, plain)

    Often avoided

    • Peanuts/groundnuts (singdana/moongphali): grow underground, so many Jains avoid them during Paryushan due to higher himsa.
    • Salted, roasted-in-oil, honey‑coated, or masala‑mixed nuts: avoid additives and extra processing.
    • Anything with possible insect infestation or moisture that may cause rapid sprouting/fermentation.

Notes to keep it proper for Paryushan vows

    • If you have taken Ekasana/Biyasana, take nuts only within that meal window and in moderation.
    • Use only plain, pre‑checked, and preferably pre‑washed/dry nuts; avoid late‑evening eating.
    • Traditions can vary. Shwetambar and Digambar households follow similar restraint here, but always honor your personal vows (anuvrat/mahavrat) and your family/guru’s guidance.

If you are unsure, treat nuts as a supplement, not a main item, and keep the diet as simple and satvik as possible to support pratikraman, prabhavana, and svadhyaya.
