In Jain time‑cycle (kāl), we are in:

• Half‑cycle: Avasarpiṇī (the descending/degenerating half).
• Current era (āra): 5th āra, called Duḥṣamā (a sorrow‑dominant period).

Key points:

• In the 5th āra, spiritual abilities and life‑spans are reduced; no new Tīrthaṅkaras or Kevalīs arise in Bharat Kṣetra, and liberation from here is not possible in this āra. In Mahāvideha Kṣetra, however, liberation remains possible.
• Duration: The 5th āra lasts 21,000 years. As of August 25, 2025, roughly about 2,500 years have passed in this āra, with about 18,500 years remaining.
• Tradition note: Both Digambar and Śvetāmbara agree we are in the 5th āra of Avasarpiṇī. They differ only on some exact historical dating (e.g., the year count since Bhagwān Mahāvīr’s nirvāṇa), not on the current āra itself.

This preserves the traditional Jain understanding of kāl and its six āras.
