Sweet lime juice
From a Jain viewpoint:
- Sweet lime (mosambi) juice counts as phal-aahar (fruit-based food) and is generally acceptable for householders, especially during daylight hours. Avoid after sunset if you observe chauvihār/biyāsan.
- During fasts, practices vary: some take only boiled water; others allow strained fruit juice during partial fasts. Follow your family/tradition’s niyam.
- Monastics have far stricter rules; processed juices are typically not taken.
Ahimsā-friendly way to prepare:
- Use fresh, seasonal fruit; wash and inspect to avoid harming tiny beings.
- Cut gently; try not to crush seeds.
- Strain the juice through a clean, fine cloth; use only filtered/boiled-and-cooled water if diluting.
- Do not add honey or unfiltered ingredients; avoid ice of uncertain water.
- Consume the same day, in daylight; do not store overnight or ferment.
