“Ichhāmi Khamāsanu” (often said as “Ichhāmi Khamāsamāno”) is a Prakrit phrase used in Jain practice. Its simple meaning is: “I humbly seek forgiveness.”

• Literal sense: “Ichhāmi” = I wish/desire; “Khamāsanu/Khamāsamāno” = to be forgiven/seeking forgiveness. So, “I wish to be forgiven.”
• Spirit/intent: It is a humble apology meant to soften passions (kashāyas) and reduce karma through forgiveness, in line with ahimsā and maitri.
• How it’s used:

- During Pratikraman and related rituals while seeking forgiveness from all beings. - When one may have disturbed someone in worship or study, or when approaching/passing elders, sādhus/sādhvīs—expressing humility and asking pardon.

Traditions:

• Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara Jains use this expression (spellings vary), and the meaning remains the same: a respectful seeking of forgiveness.
