Can you eat garlic chutney prepared before paryushan during paryushan?
Short answer: No.
Why:
- Garlic is a root (kand). Both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions avoid all root vegetables (like garlic, onion, potato, etc.), and this restraint is observed even more strictly during Paryushan/Das‑Lakshan for ahimsa and purity of diet.
- Food should be fresh, simple, and cooked the same day before sunset. Pre‑prepared chutney is “stale” for Paryushan standards and is not taken.
What to do instead:
- Prefer fresh, same‑day preparations without any root ingredients.
- Follow your local sangh/guru’s niyam (e.g., no greens during Shwetambar Paryushan, boiled water timings, etc.).
