In simple terms, Jainism has two main sects:

• Digambar
• Shwetambar

Within Shwetambar, there are three widely known sub-sects:

• Murtipujak (image-worshipping)
• Sthanakvasi (non-image-worshipping)
• Terapanth (non-image-worshipping, founded by Acharya Bhikshu)

So people often say “two main sects” or “five major branches” (counting the three Shwetambar sub-sects separately).

Note: Digambar tradition also has its own internal lineages and groups (such as Bispanthi, Terapanthi of Digambar origin, and Taranpanthi), but the universally accepted primary division of Jainism is into two: Digambar and Shwetambar.
