Give chauviyar pachhkhan
Chauvihar Pachhkhan (standard vow)
Prakrit/Apabhramsha wording (commonly used) “Ahaṃ ajja chauvihāraṃ vrataṃ grahṇāmi. Ajja sāyaṃ samaya-pariyantaṃ na khavissami, na pivissami, na chuvissami, na rasaṃ pivissami.”
Simple English meaning (arth) “Today I take the vow of Chauvihar. From sunset until the set time (till sunrise), I will not:
- eat,
- drink water,
- chew anything,
- or lick/taste any liquids.”
Notes
- Chauvihar means complete abstinence from the four kinds of intake during the night: eating, drinking, chewing, and licking/tasting.
- Essence in both traditions (Śvetāmbara and Digambara) is the same: no food or water after sunset until sunrise. Exact wording may vary by sect and local paramparā, but the intent remains identical.
- If combining with Navkārśī, the restraint continues until 48 minutes after sunrise.
