Timing of 3 potai
“3 potai” usually refers to the three standard post‑sunrise meal windows observed by Jain lay followers for parṇā/first intake:
- Navkārsi: 48 minutes after local sunrise.
- Porsi: After 1 prahar from sunrise (one‑fourth of the daytime). If day is 12 hours, Porsi ≈ 3 hours after sunrise.
- Sādh‑Porsi: After 1.5 prahar from sunrise. If day is 12 hours, Sādh‑Porsi ≈ 4½ hours after sunrise.
Example (when sunrise is 6:00 am and sunset 6:00 pm):
- Navkārsi ≈ 6:48 am
- Porsi ≈ 9:00 am
- Sādh‑Porsi ≈ 10:30 am
Notes in tradition:
- Shwetāmbars and Digambars both insist on “after sunrise” discipline; exact clock times depend on your city’s sunrise and the day’s length (for prahar). Always complete all eating before sunset and keep bhāva of ahiṃsā and śuddhi.
